Elizabeth McMurchie received her Bachelor of Science degree from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, in 2015. There she was a field assistant studying harbor seal behavior, majored in Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology, and minored in Anthropology. She went on to study at George Mason University (GMU) in Fairfax, Virginia, where she obtained a Master of Science degree and completed a thesis titled "A Floristic Survey of the Vascular Plants of the Blue RIdge Center for Environmental Stewardship, Purcellville, Loudoun County, Virginia". While at GMU, she worked as a graduate research assistant and graduate teaching assistant, as well as working for Meadowlark Botanical Gardens as a botanical consultant. At Iowa State University, she is currently working as a graduate assistant in EEOB as a member of Dr. Lynn Clark's lab, studying Neotropical woody bamboos.
